Big Bash Tips: Heat Could Make a Hot Start in Matches One and Two
Perth Scorchers opened their Big Bash League (BBL) campaign with a five-wicket win over Sydney Sixers in a rain-affected season opener at Optus Stadium, as Cooper Connolly stole the spotlight with a match-winning knock.
In a truncated contest reduced to 11 overs per side due to heavy rain and lightning, the Scorchers chased down 114 with five balls to spare, after the Sixers finished on 113 for 5.
Connolly Leads Scorchers Chase
After the Sixers posted a competitive total, Cooper Connolly produced a brilliant innings, scoring 59 off 31 balls. Batting at No. 3, Connolly smashed five sixes, displaying his power and confidence on a bouncy surface.
Connolly dominated a crucial 48-run fourth-wicket partnership with captain *Ashton Turner (16)**, keeping the chase firmly under control. Although Connolly was dismissed with nine runs still required, the Scorchers comfortably crossed the line to secure victory.
The knock continued Connollyโs strong run of form following impressive performances for Australia and Australia A, just days before the upcoming IPL auction, where he is expected to attract interest.
Tough BBL Debut for Babar Azam
The match proved a difficult introduction to the Big Bash League for Babar Azam, who struggled to handle the extra bounce at Optus Stadium. Batting in magenta for the Sixers, Babar scored just 2 off 5 balls before falling to a hard-length delivery from Brody Couch.
There was huge anticipation surrounding Babarโs BBL debut, with the Pakistan star headlining a group of international players featuring in this seasonโs tournament. Despite surviving a couple of early chances, his stay at the crease was short-lived.
Sixers Recover After Early Collapse
Sydney Sixers were in early trouble at 15 for 2, with opener Daniel Hughes dismissed for a duck. However, they recovered strongly through aggressive batting from Josh Philippe (28) and Jack Edwards, who top-scored with a rapid 46 not out off 21 balls.
The late assault lifted the Sixers to a competitive total, despite a disciplined bowling effort from the Scorchers. Brody Couch impressed with figures of 2 for 12, while Sean Dwarshuis claimed 2 for 36.
Rain Delay and Bright Start to the Season
The start of the match was delayed by 80 minutes due to heavy rain and lightning, marking the first time covers were used for a BBL match at Optus Stadium since its opening in 2018. Once play began, the drainage system worked effectively, allowing the game to proceed without further interruption.
Despite early wickets during the chase, including the dismissals of Mitchell Marsh and Finn Allen, the Scorchers remained confident on a hard, fast outfield. Connollyโs innings ensured the home side began their campaign with a convincing win.
